Tropical cyclones or typhoons that form in the South China Sea and western North Pacific affect billions  of people in Asian and Pacific island nations and thus understanding the nature of tropical cyclones and forecasting tropical cyclone activity are of great importance. The tropical cyclone basin is located in the most important monsoon region and tropical cyclones can form year around. Tropical cyclone activity is associated with nearly all of the fields in atmospheric sciences and includes complex interactions with the ocean and land mass. Tropical cyclones can cause significant damage and also bring sufficient fresh water.

PTRC Mission:
1. To provide a platform for collabrative research between Chinese and international scientists on tropical cyclones and related fields
2. To improve our understanding of the nature of tropical cyclones and provide scientific fundamentals for tropical cyclone forecasts
3. To encourage graduate students and young scientists to conduct creative researches on tropical cyclones
